Venmo Feature Warning So People Learn from My Mistake

Post Body

Hello there all!

Yesterday I made the wonderful mistake of typoing my phone number when using the Venmo instant transfer feature within Fidelity and I poofed $1100 dollars.

Just a reminder to everyone to make sure you doublecheck where you send the money to when using that feature.

I've called Fidelity twice (love the fidelity support btw they're super nice) they said it's already out of fidelity and up to Venmo at this point.

Called Venmo support 4 times total, Venmo support is the worst damn support I've ever experienced. They hung up on me the first call. Second call didn't understand what I was asking and kept saying i never sent money from my personal Venmo account and told me to call Fidelity. 3rd time I asked to speak to a manager and they, you guessed it, hung up on me. Fourth call I called and got the first Venmo person that actually understood what I was asking, but she said she couldn't do anything about it and when she reached out to support to try to transfer me they told her no they can't fix it.

I then called Fidelity back and basically just broke down crying on the phone with some guy, he was super nice, I don't remember his name but shout out to that guy you were a good therapist. He said that it's with Venmo and they need to fix it and I agree with him but unfortunately Venmo is terrible.

After yesterday I've decided to accept it as a loss, but just wanted to warn everyone else out there to

  1. Don't use Venmo, they're a terrible company
  2. If you ignore the first warning, make sure to double check the phone number when transferring from Fidelity.

The number I sent the money to was apparently not linked to an account, so I'm hoping it just comes back someday but we'll see.

That's my story, peace.

Edit 1 2:00PM 05/23/23: Sent a modmail to the mods here and they’re opening a dispute or something for me with Venmo I’m not really sure but they said it can take a few days. I’ll update if I get my money back. God bless Fidelity support for being competent!

Edit Pt. 2 5:50PM 05/23/23: GOT MY MONEY BACK AND IT'S ONLY BEEN 27 HOURS SINCE MY MISTAKE AND ABOUT 3 HOURS SINCE I MESSAGED THE MODS HERE!!

I just want to thank a few people for my successful recovery:

Thanks to the subreddit mods, specifically /u/FidelityCaitlin you're the bomb and between you and the support guy I talked to on the phone yesterday y'all made a return customer that really appreciates your business and how well your support team operates.

Thanks to /u/WileyBumtail for making this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/fidelityinvestments/comments/rvw6gd/fidelity_and_venmo_a_dispute_and_a_cautionary_tale/

Your post is the only thing I found when googling solutions for this and it gave me the idea to message the reddit mods

I also want to take a moment to say how awful Venmo is one more time. That company sucks man jeeze I can't wait to close my account later.

Anyway, thanks for supporting me through this emotional rollercoaster!

I can finally say this phrase seriously, "We did it reddit!"

:)
