[19M] Recieving 100k when I turn 21.

Post Body

I’ve recently received some amazing news, that I will be getting 100k when I turn 21. I’m currently 19, and extremely lucky to be in this position, and especially to have some warning about it.

What I’d like to do is position myself to make maximum use of this money. I’m young, but also would like to use it to its full potential.

I’ve currently got 5k saved up, as I’ve been focused on my degree and only working 1 job. I’ve just got 2 recently, and am aiming to save around $400 - $600 per week. 10k-25k per year.

I’m also currently in uni studying computer science.

So I’m currently working two jobs, making $400 per week from a part time job (so hours are guaranteed) and anywhere from $200 - $600 from a casual job I recently started. I’m also saving around $200 per week for travel.

My two options, in my mind, are as follows:

1) I just chuck it in the S&P 500 and make regular contributions, and access the money later. $200-$400 per week. 10-20k per year.

2) I use the $100k when I turn 21 to buy an apartment, alongside saving hard for a couple years to afford a mortgage on the apartment. I would then rent this apartment out to pay off the mortgage, and at the end I’m left with a 500k apartment paid off (after 10 or so years) free to generate rent for me. It will probably be negatively geared at the cost of around $50-100 per week.

The issue is that, option number 2 is a lot of hulabalu. Would it be smarter for my current position to just set it and forget it in the S&P 500?

I also want to move out around when I’m 21 - 23, so I would be renting somewhere, while renting out an apartment to someone, which seems like almost a waste. My cost to move out outside of rent from having lived with my girlfriend for a month or two is about $200 per week.

Anyways, I appreciate any and all advice, and if you have any other suggestions from what to do with the money please let me know :).

Sub is filled with a bunch of grindset wage slaves. Put 80k into high yield savings account and use 20k to backpack around the world for 2 years after uni. You'll have a pinpoint idea of what you want from life, in partners and in your career after it, and 100k waiting for you in your savings

Also, f- you for inheriting 100k at 21.
