when to do side quest ? and why would someone do it ?

Hello everybody, I just began the game with an elementalist and found myself only doing the main quest and ignoring all of the yellow side quests. Even with this way of playing, I am still 4 level above the main quest requirements. So i was wondering what is the usefulness of all the sidequests ? It doesn't give a lot of xp nor lot of gils right ?
Is it just for lore enthousiats ?
