Are there benefits to maxing out a base class?

I haven't been able to find a good answer to this? I'm currently playing Arcanist. About to go into scholar. Is there any benefit to maxing out arcanist? Like do i take ruin 2, Maim and mend 2 or surcast with me over to scholar? or do i get those from scholar by leveling scholar?
