Post Body

I just spent a good bit of time just watching a whole stream of bots going through Camp Drybone. You know the ones - randomly generated names, constantly spamming a Shout or Say in the citystates saying you can buy Gil for cheap at [redacted website].

A part of the Gil they sell apparently comes from the MSQ, because a friend of mine just caught a few dozen of them filtering through Drybone. It was immediately apparent from the getgo that they were not humans, because...

  • They were all Lv50 THM or BLM and all had the same gear.
  • They don't walk, they teleport from location to location, even if it was from the Aetheryte to the MSQ NPC in Drybone.
  • They teleport to X 0 Y 0 and FAR underground (as noticed by use of /icam <t>) when they're performing a teleport destined for somewhere outside the area. My friends and I theorized they do this to prevent the TP out animation from catching someone's eye.
  • They fight dirty.
    • Caught them doing the first BLM class quest near Highbridge, and they teleport a short distance away after spawning their Deepvoid Souls... and underground a bit too, to stay out of range of the AoE attacks.
    • Here, since so many of them are filtering through the quest, many Deepvoid Souls show up, and the bots underground just spam Fire II - the AoE spell.
    • Clever thinking - they wait until there's no more Souls before finishing the quest objective.
  • And last but not least... they all had pencilstashes.

All of this makes me wonder, just how lax is the server-side verification of all of this? It seems like it's possible for the [redacted website] people to modify their client to just... set themselves to Lv50, teleport wherever (even places PCs can't normally go). I could see not wanting to do speed checks on every PC to make sure they're actually feasibly walking places, but isn't level something that should be kept sacred, especially as SqEx is selling "skip to 60" books?

Surely a majority of these bots could be made useless with just a little more checking...
