A question on the echo - can it see the future?

I was under the impression that the echo is what keeps us from actually failing a trial or fight. I feel like I’m basing this on an ARR cutscene, but I can’t find anywhere it’s actually listed, but I have seen a few other people say they thought it did that so I doubt I’m pulling it from nowhere.

Basically that anytime we fail, that wasn’t the real run, that was just the echo showing us what not to do so that when we win we succeed without having ever really failed. Is that not correct? Where am I getting that idea from? I have vague memories of a la noscea cutscene that set that up for me.
