Question about target lock

I'm temporarily on PS5 after playing on PC for years. Still getting used to controller. My issue is, I just did a duty and when locked on to the boss, my character moves in a sort of half circle around an invisible wall around the enemy, I can't move closer without unlocking the target, moving forward, and locking again. Caused me some headaches getting out of the way of attacks. Is there a camera or movement setting I'm missing? Thank you.
