Steam cd key and login

Hi
Many years ago I used to play not much at all I think back then I used the standalone client.
Have tried now to play through steam as I want to play on the steam deck install is all fine login is fine then asks for a registration key I found out you can get this from steam entered it says this is already used.
Is there any work around for this ? Even if I have to purchase again or something just want to run in through steam
