What type of structure is this?

Is this structure another way of sporangia being dispersed? Almost looks like a "sporangia spike" to me. Also, what would the scientific name for this be? I'm confused because I've only ever seen spores on the underside of leaves. I'd assume these will pop when it gets dry because they're spreading quite easily.
