After a while, she set the comb to the side, and changed to her hands. She ran her fingers lightly through his hair and scratched gently at his scalp. She tried different motions, finding what he seemed to like, enjoying getting pleased responses from him.

She relaxed back on the sofa.

Using her comb, she began to comb his hair. She took care not to pull anything, just running her comb through his hair in smooth strokes, applying pressure to his scalp. She half watched her show, half combed his hair. After a while, running the comb through his hair wasn’t doing much anymore, but she continued anyway.

Hannah got up and went to the fridge, retrieving a bucket of strawberries that she had bought.

When she sat back down on the sofa, she told Ben, “Can you turn towards me a bit?”

On instinct, you crouched down in front of him. “Hey.” You put your hand behind his ear, and scratched it gently. And-- oh, that was pathetic. He immediately went from looking at you like you were a monster to be terrified of, to looking at you like you were a goddess come down on Earth, the last hope of Earth’s creatures. Or maybe-- to use another analogy-- the last bit of comfort presented to a prisoner before his execution. ~
