With brands like Ralph Lauren being available globally as an aspirational lifestyle to buy into, I am open to buying into it (again, after a hiatus) to obtain a sense of quality, sportiness and enjoyment. The wonderful thing, is that prep style is good for all ages, not just the youths. A navy blazer can be worn in college and then again in middle age, with slight adjustments in cut and proportion. Same for the white cable knit sweater. A long scarf, if you don't lose it, will be there through any bodily changes. (Sidenote: I did lose my blue and white wide stripe scarf by leaving it at a party). Seersucker can be for everyone, and should be, because it's a breathable fabric when the weather is very hot.
The polo shirt isn't a hot fashion item, but it will reliably take you through a weekend, a dog walk or having a visitor in the home.
Today's culture aims towards equality, and prep's class and status connotations cannot be ignored. However i'd like to think preppy clothing transcends that - it can also just be reliable, tidy clothing with an aura of comfort in all facets of life.
A handful of photos, mostly old school ad campaigns for illustrative examples: https://imgur.com/a/EEhFBLt (Please remember the heyday of prep was before the time of race and size diversity, and as such diverse photos were hard to source).
How do/will you incorporate prep style into your closet?
What brands do you recommend? (Clothing, accessories, homewares)
Where do you see this style evolving to?
