I was intrigued by this franchise, and I finally got around to exploring it this past 2 months.
I was not sure if I wanted to read the VN at first, and decided to start with Deen's Fate route adaptation. I have to agree, it's crap. It's not only not a good adaptation of this route, it's not a good anime in general.
I continued by watching ufotable's UBW, and I have to say it's a huge improvement in every way. That is when I decided I should at least read the [Fate] route of the VN just so I can experience it how it's meant to be experienced, before watching Heaven's Feel pt 1 (which I'll do sometime before watching part 2 this Thursday).
I have to say, I fully enjoyed reading it, although it does take a lot of time and commitment. I didn't expect it to take this long (16 hours) although I've read that some of you guys take over 20 hours per route. I was planning on trying to finish all VN routes by this time, but obviously I didn't come close to it. I'll start reading UBW and Heaven's Feel after I watch Heaven's Feel part 2, and I can't wait for it.
Anyway, I think it might just be the route itself, but I still don't find Emiya likeable, although he is certainly more complex than the 2006 adaptation made him out to be. I still prefer the UBW anime storyline over this, so I probably will enjoy UBW's VN more as well.
Watching UBW beforehand and knowing Spoiler. Since I watched Deen's version beforehand as well, I noticed all the major differences, which I now know is Spoiler. I didn't regret knowing it beforehand, but it would've been nice if I didn't know it.
This is the first ever VN I've read, and it probably won't be the last!
