The TLDR is that solar has about a 6-year pay back if you are using a diesel pump and about an 11-year pay back if you are using solar to supplement an existing electrical irrigation pump.

I am in New Zealand so its currently summer, prices of diesel and kwhs from grid are based on NZ observations.
