I'm going to try and write a short story for an idéa I have, and I needed to make a magic system and I would like some pointers for it. Here is what I have so far;
The magic is centered around runes and will, needs to be vocalized, use a Norse word for the reaction you want.
It takes energy to use the magic, in the same way that physical work costs energy, you will eventually be exhausted by too much use of the magic.
To be able to use the magic, a "link to the gods" is required.
Asier priests master the magic. One cannot "mistakenly" use the magic as it is heavily controlled by will and intention.
The magic should be channeled through something, the norm is a stick with engraved runes named “vǫlr”. With a run rod you can be more precise with what you want to do, without something to channel through you are bound to simpler and more chaotic results.
One can also use runes to enchant objects, carve in the specific rune and invest it with magic, a so-called rungale. This is more difficult and only gives a "simpler" form of magic ie a specific event.
Fe-Fehu - Symbolizes material and spiritual wealth, happiness and prosperity and goal fulfillment.
Uru-Uruz -Dawn, new life, rebirth, energy. Can symbolize initiative and spiritual strength, and can show a positive change.
ᚦ-Thurisaz -A very powerful rune, which symbolizes power, chaos and transformation, perhaps even the protection of the gods.
AnsAnsuz-- Symbolizes communication, the gift of speech, song. May indicate that such properties may develop.
ᚱ-Raidho-Strong guardrail, showing order and structure, to overcome trouble. Said to be Tors runa.
Una-Kauna-torchback, symbolizing enlightenment and warmth, is also said to be linked to ritual fires when celebrating the winter and summer solstice.
- Gebo- Provides for harmony and balance, giving without expecting anything in return and just to the gods. May indicate that any positive event is underway.
- Wynja- Shows joy, vitality and sensuality. May indicate that a positive, creative period is imminent.
Hag-Hagal - Provides for unforeseen, revolutionary events that can be both difficult and cumbersome, but necessary. A rune that indicates changes.
Ud-Naud -A powerful fateful rune with the three Norns Urd, Verdandi and Skuld, who weave the wires of destiny. Can indicate difficulties and challenges.
AzIsaz-- Symbolizes stationary, stagnation and pausing, as well as orderly discipline. Can indicate a warning that you should take it a little quiet in what you are doing for a while.
Ara-runeJara -A fertilityassociated with Frej and Freja. Symbolizing sowing and harvesting - whatever you sow you also reap.
ᛈ- Perdhu- Symbolizes stability and continuity, both feet on earth and physical health. Possibly there is also a connection to ritual dance and shamanism.
ᛉ- Ihwaz- Can symbolize the plant kingdom, that you are on the right path, the guardrail. Also associations with spears and arrows.
-Algiz - Very strong guardrail, a warning for intruders. The so-called horror helmet is made up of four R in a cross with the tags outwards. The rune can also be associated with the power animals, and protects the wearer from evil powers.
ᛊ- Sun-Symbolizes heat, sun, summer, heart and even victory. But a strong positive force.
ᛏ-Tyr -A rune with a strong, forward-looking energy, can symbolize swords and positive masculinity. Shows boldness, sacrifice, and even balance.
ᛒ-Bjarka -A female runa associated with Freya and fertility. Can also stand for healing, nature and inner beauty.
ᛖ-Ehwaz -Hostunan is associated with Odin's eight-legged Sleipner horse, and stands for communication and travel between different worlds and the consciousness plan. A great powerhouse for shamans and magicians!
Man- Mannaz- Provides for man as a whole, compassion and loyalty to the family, ie their closest.
Lau LaukazWater Runway stands for emotions, subconscious energy currents and soul travels. Also associated with intuition and psychic power - a rune for the shaman.
ᛜ-Ing -A lyckoruna, stands for male fertility, creativity, and creativity and vigor in what is sown in the spring. Associated with Frej except Ing.
- Dagaz- Symbolizes the transformation from night to day - the dawn of the dawn and the new day. Compare our current expression "the day's". Also stands for the summer solstice, and can indicate a new opportunity or insight.
ᛟ-Othala -Odalrunan is a symbol of the fatherland, the farm and the family. Can also symbolize wealth and contact with the ancestors. Also stands for cultivation, not just by the earth but also by the soul, art and crafts.
The runes and their meaning are just a copypasta from the research i did, I'm going to make each rune, or just the ones I need for the story, integral to a specific branch of magic, like earth. fire, water.
