I've always liked a good romantic sub plot in my fantasy but just discovered this genre at the end of 2023. I'm in my late 30s and find it hard to relate to YA or anything with ultra young protagonists.
I mostly listen to audiobooks on Audible and don't want to waste my credits or keep having to return books. But I'll totally buy a paper book if it looks amazing!
I LOVED Nettle and Bone. I also enjoyed The Bear and the Nightingale. I kind of enjoyed T Kingfisher's Paladin series, Swordheart and some of Lois McMaster Bujold's books. I tried Kate Daniels and found it to be ok. Fun but nothing that got my emotions going. Same with ACOTAR. I'm just not into OTT angsty, over confident or egotistical MMCs I think. No fated mates, reverse harem or pregnancy either - I'm looking at you Ice Planet Barbarians! I tried Stariel and Daughter of no Worlds but DNF them. Radiance was ok and kind of sweet but I felt like there wasn't enough romantic tension for me. Am I being too difficult?
I guess what I would like to read is a sweet mature romance with a trusty & cosy MMC. Where the characters actually get to know eachother instead of just lusting. Bonus points if there is travel. Tropes that I like - Grumpy & sunshine, one bed at the inn. I'm ok with enemies to lovers. Any spice level is ok.
