Astral Projections: Week 1 Tarot Reads (MNF)
Post Body
The final games of the week, the final decisions to be made. Let me guide your choices and comfort your minds through the power of Tarot reading. Hey, it's more fun than flipping a coin!
Note, I might not be able to get the second game done, but I'll try to have it out by kickoff.
Notes:
- I currently use Golden Thread Tarot to save time and better record each read. Some reads in the future might be done with a physical deck.
- Each player has a single tarot card drawn to inform the question "How will [player name] perform in [week x] of the 2019-2020 NFL season?"
- The keyword cells relate to a description in Labyrinthos. They are the same descriptions/card illustrations as those in the Golden Thread app and help explain my comments on the card visuals.
- I'm not experienced in Tarot readings prior to last NFL season.
Here we go:
Texans:
Position | Player Name | Card | Keywords | Hot take |
---|---|---|---|---|
QB | Deshaun Watson | VIII of Swords | Imprisonment, powerlessness, self-victimization | Looks like Watson will be wrapped up by the defense like the woman in this card. |
RB | Duke Johnson Jr | II of Cups | Unity, partnership, two become one | I think this points to Johnson and Hyde both embracing their roles. Look at Hyde's draw below, he's all about embracing the new situation. They've got each other's backs, though Johnson should get the points. |
RB | Carlos Hyde | The Hierophant - Reversed | Rebellion, subversiveness, new approaches | see above |
WR | DeAndre Hopkins | Knight of Swords - Reversed | No direction, disregard for consequence, unpredictability | Misrun routes or bad hands are keeping Hopkins away from jump-balls and big-plays this week. He'll be targeted, but don't expect flashy TDs or individual big-plays. |
WR | Will Fuller V | X of Pentacles - Reversed | Failure, lack of stability, lack of resources | Horrid draw. Looks like he won't be rewarding those who start him. |
WR | Kenny Stills | The Hierophant | Tradition, conformity, morality and ethics | This card is hard to read. It seems like he'll have a "statistically average game", or, a boring game. Mediocre performance. |
TE | Darren Fells | VI of Wands - Reversed | self-doubt, lack of recognition, punishment | oof, won't be a good game for Fells. He doesn't believe in himself and is getting punished for it. |
K | Ka'imi Fairbairn | V of Pentacles - reversed | Recovery, isolation | Sounds like a good game, scarcity going away means points are coming. He should see some good opportunities this game and he should at least be slightly rewarded. Above-average performance. |
DST | VI of Swords - reversed | emotional baggage, unresolved issues, resisting transition | Whelp, this doesn't exactly sound good. The boat is upside down and resting on swords. Should mean holes in the defense. |
Saints:
Position | Player Name | Card | Keywords | Hot take |
---|---|---|---|---|
QB | Drew Brees | Ace of Swords | Victory, raw strength, sharp mind | Great draw. Look for Brees to be on-point all day and showing his veteran presence. He's leading his team to victory. |
RB | Alvin Kamara | King of Swords - Reversed | Manipulative, cruel, criticism | I like this for Kamara. Not a good card for the layman, but an NFL running back should be selfish and deceive the defense. The fear here is poor decision making and leaving yards on the table with misread cuts. I'm not downgrading him as he's still looking out for himself. Probably a great DFS play. |
RB | Latavius Murray | X of Pentacles | Legacy, inheritance, culmination | Another X of Pentacles. I'm curious if this may mean Murray takes TDs from Kamara, but with far fewer touches. In any way, it seems like Murray should perform well. |
WR | Michael Thomas | Ace of Pentacles - Reversed | Lost opportunity, missed chance | Wow, terrible card. Defense locking Thomas down? Brees had a great draw, so look for others to vulture TDs. |
WR | Ted Ginn Jr | x of Pentacles | Legacy, inheritance, culmination | Wow, looks like Ginn gets the TDs tonight. His tree is full of points to be gathered. |
WR | Tre'Quan Smith | X of Cups | Happiness, fulfillment, celebration | This is the Ginn and Smith show. |
TE | Jared Cook | IX of Swords | Anxiety, hopelessness, nightmares | Hmm... knives falling on one's head cannot be considered a good sign... |
K | Wil Lutz | King of Pentacles | Abundance, power, security | Seems like tonight might be a kicker battle. Points on both sides. |
DST | Queen of Cups - Reversed | coldness, insecurity, dependence | "emotional instability" makes this sound like a mixed bag. They'll bend for sure, but on some level, they're still performing. Mediocre performance. |
