Oh hi there, r/fantasyfootball. Sunday is quickly approaching and I know you're still out there -- questioning, pondering who to last-minute swap. Let's explore that further through the power of Tarot.
Quick note, I'm posting the top-5 at QB, RB, and WR and adding further readings to this spreadsheet. I'll be adding more reads tonight and as the day goes on tomorrow. If there's anyone specific you want, say someone outside the top-20 from fantasypros, please leave a comment and I'll do my best (or leave your own interpretation to continue the fun!).
Notes:
- I currently use Golden Thread Tarot to save time and better record each read. Some reads in the future might be done with a physical deck.
- Each player has a single tarot card drawn to inform the question "How will [player name] perform in [week x] of the 2019-2020 NFL season?"
- Each card cell links to a description in Labyrinthos. They are the same descriptions/card illustrations as those in the Golden Thread app and help explain my comments on the card visuals.
- I'm not experienced in Tarot readings prior to last NFL season.
Here we go:
Quarterback:
Name | Card | Keywords | Hot Take |
---|---|---|---|
Patrick Mahomes | Queen of Wands | Courage, determination, joy | Wow, this looks great. Two wands and two flowers, two TDs? He'll be shining no matter what. |
Deshaun Watson | VIII of Swords | Imprisonment, powerlessness, self-victimization | Looks like Watson will be wrapped up by the defense like the woman in this card. |
Drew Brees | Ace of Swords | Victory, raw strength, sharp mind | Great draw. Look for Brees to be on-point all day and showing his veteran presence. He's leading his team to victory. |
Jameis Winston | VIII of Cups | Walking away, disillusionment, leaving behind | This draw sounds bad, but I don't think it's terrible for Winston's points. He's on a new journey with Arians, I think he underperforms to expectations but still looks good. |
Carson Wentz | VIII of Swords - Reversed | Self-acceptance, new perspective, freedom | Exactly the draw that Wentz needs. Solid performance coming, validates those who drafted him. Will look more like his old self. |
Running Back:
Name | Card | Keywords | Hot Take |
---|---|---|---|
Saquon Barkley | VII of Swords | Deception, trickery, turning a blind eye | This card seems negative, but I think it actually suggests a good game for Barkley. Trickery and fox-like agility is good for a running back. Let's see some nice cuts and defenders left in the dust. |
Christian McCaffrey | VII of Cups | Choices, fantasy, illusion | Ominous draw, hard to predict how CMC will perform. I think this suggests a downgrade due to the idea that this card suggests wishful thinking and not being grounded. With CMC having such high expectations on him in most drafts, we might just be thinking wishfully. |
Alvin Kamara | King of Swords - Reversed | Manipulative, cruel, criticism | I like this for Kamara. Not a good card for the layman, but an NFL running back should be selfish and deceive the defense. The fear here is poor decision making and leaving yards on the table with misread cuts. I'm not downgrading him as he's still looking out for himself. Probably a great DFS play. |
Dalvin Cook | The Magician - Reversed | Trickery, illusions, out of touch | Disappointing draw for Cook. Definite downgrade for this week as he's "untrustworthy and in over his head". |
David Johnson | King of Cups | Compassion, control, balance | Johnson owners will be rewarded this week, but Johnson won't be the #1 RB overall this week. I think he gets a TD and has solid yardage no matter what though. "Generosity" bodes well. |
Wide Receiver:
Name | Card | Keywords | Hot Take |
---|---|---|---|
Michael Thomas | Ace of Pentacles - Reversed | Lost opportunity, missed chance | Wow, terrible card. Defense locking Thomas down? Brees had a great draw, so look for others to vulture TDs. |
DeAndre Hopkins | Knight of Swords - Reversed | No direction, disregard for consequence, unpredictability | Misrun routes or bad hands are keeping Hopkins away from jump-balls and big-plays this week. He'll be targeted, but don't expect flashy TDs or individual big-plays. |
OBJ | V of Swords | Unbridled ambition, win at all costs, sneakiness | Great draw, OBJ has a head on a sword and will be going all out. There's fear here that he isn't fully on the same page as his team, but I think that's expected. He needs to rely on his teammates instead of just big-plays. The selfishness I think overcomes the negativity, confident start. |
Juju | IX of Wands - Reversed | Exhaustion, fatigue, reaching burnout | Losing AB has taken a toll on Juju as he's doing so much work. I think this points more to future consequences than a true downgrade this week. He needs others to step up or else he will be affected soon. |
Mike Evans | Judgement | Reflection, reckoning, innervoice | I like this draw for Evans. Assuming he plays, I think those hands rise up from the ground to snag deep balls. This team is waking up. |
