Hi all, so I've been reviewing scoring settings for the upcoming season and thinking about why things are the way they are and I've got to say the thing that still bothers me the most is default defensive scoring. Why is it the way it is? Is 399yds allowed really 2 full fantasy points better than 400yds? I don't think so.
The best reason I can come up with is why it was done that way is that it's a relic from days past when scoring was done by hand and range bands for point and yards allowed made it much quicker to calculate scores. This is also why running/receiving yardage used to round down by 10s as well, basically it saved people time.
Well these days it isn't an issue since everything is computed anyway (but that said I still don't get some of the scoring bands settings, they aren't linear at all). Check out Points Allowed and Yardage Allowed, whats with the seemingly random changes in how large the bands are or how big the increments in points are? I could see it if it was an attempt to adopt some kind of bell curve around scoring but that doesn't seem to be the case.
If you look at those graphs you'll see how I do my scoring based on a slightly altered decimal system I credit to /u/jeffgtx is this thread from two years ago. The only difference I've made is setting the Pts Allowed multiplier to -.2 instead of -.25 and lowering the base points by 1 to 11 which seems to more closely follow the default curve. This results in the following defensive scoring settings in ESPN.
Anywho, in my mind it just makes a lot more sense and I think it's a better system than the default. Curious if you guys have tried it out, or something similar and what you like best. Would love to see other sites adopt a better defensive scoring than the currently flawed, in my opinion, system.
