Let me start by saying that John Wall returned much better than I expected. There's a bit of rust for sure since he hasn't played in two years, but he still looks really good out there. The speed is there and he still looks pretty explosive. He's putting up 21/3/6 this year so if you were able to draft him late in a points league, congrats I think you've got yourself an absolute steal.
However, it's been a different story in category leagues. Looking past the fact that he misses games every once in a while, his per game production simply isn't great even though he's putting up 21/3/6. This is because he's also killing you with his 42% FG, 74% FT, and 3.3 TOs per game. This is good for an overall rank of 156 on a per game basis according to BBM, which isn't great.
The upside:
If you're punting both FG/TO which I'm assuming you are if you drafted Wall in the first place, then he's ranked 67th which is well above his ADP. If he can get his FT and Steals back to his career averages (currently putting up career lows), then he can potentially break into the top 40 when accounting for a FG/TO punt which is great for his ADP.
With Wood coming back soon, it's possible that Wall and Wood can establish some type of chemistry on the court which can potentially increase his assists per game. Wall averages 9APG for his career and is only averaging 6APG this season. With that said, I wouldn't hold my breath since this Rockets team is potentially one of the worst teams he's ever played on, and his assists numbers didn't look that much different this year even when Wood wasn't injured.
With Oladipo most likely getting traded, Wall might see an increase in his usage even though he's already seeing a career high usage %.
The downside:
The Rockets have absolutely nothing to play for, and will sit Wall at any chance possible to tank. This becomes extremely annoying as fantasy playoff approaches along with the tank race. The Rockets have NOT been winning with John Wall at the helm, but it's not outrageous to think that the Rockets will sit him given his injury history. Another reason why the Rockets might want to sit Wall is the emergence of the KPJ rocket, they will want to give their young guys as many reps as possible since Wall is not in their long term plans.
Even if the Rockets don't sit him, his tendency to get injured and sit a few games here and there is potentially toxic for your fantasy playoffs.
The Ehhh:
I doubt John Wall gets traded this season, there really isn't a reason for a bad/mediocre team to trade for a 30 year old John Wall on the 2nd year of his MEGA 4 year contract. There also isn't a contending team that could possibly afford his contract.
I don't know what this means and whether or not it has a positive or negative effect on his value, but ehh.
What are your opinions on John Wall this season in category leagues? Wall owners, what are you looking/trying to do with him? Are you exploring trades or are you holding? If you're trading, are you trying to trade him straight up or packaging him with another player?
