Chicago White Sox finished 73-89 despite a strong start to their season. We completely flipped from last season, where we had all-star pitchers and no run production to having to some excellent sluggers and an absolute horrid bullpen. This won't be as detailed as the Yankees post the first guy did (I'm not as huge of a fantasy baseball player as most here), but I thought I'd try my best.
Bounce-Back Candidate
Avisail Garcia Two years ago this guy was our shining hope until the Abreu signing. And while he did produce, an injury sidelined him for most of the season. He'll be back and in strong form most likely, although this may be an indicator that he is injury prone.
Good Buys
Chris Sale-SP Obviously everyone knows his name but I've gotten him the past two seasons for much less than he's worth. While the White Sox have a hard time holding onto a lead, hurting his "Win" category, he will rarely record a loss. Also his sick-nasty slider made his K/9 a resounding 10.76 last season, and he's also only 25 years old and is a workhorse of a pitcher. His herky-jerky delivery leaves some people concerned for his long-term effectiveness but so far he hasn't blown his elbow or anything and he seems to be just fine. Personally, I love watching him pitch and he can definitely be the ace on any team.
Jose Quintana-SP A good bench option for most leagues, he's the second pitcher in the rotation and is very consistent, although don't expect him to put up major numbers each game. His K/9 was 8.0 but he does give up a lot of hits. Usually a cheap buy since he's less recognizable.
Adam Eaton-OF Solid option and younger player (25 years old) he definitely looks good coming off a decent season and will only continue to get better. Stays healthy, doesn't hit home runs but he did have a BA of .300 last season.
Connor Gillaspie-3B Twenty-seven years old, he's currently listed as only a 3B but I expect his role to change since the White Sox basically do this with every infielder and he could be a valuable utility player. Of course if his position doesn't change you can likely find a much better third basemen, but he's still a solid option for a deeper league.
Players to Stay Away From
Any and all of our relief pitchers I cannot stress this enough, the White Sox have one of the worst relief pitching rosters in the majors right now and it doesn't look like that will change for the time being.
Jose Abreu What?! I know right? My thinking is that having just won AL Rookie of the Year he will be wildly over-valued in most leagues. Also, keep in mind we may be looking at a Yasiel Puig scenario where he comes out on fire then slowly dwindles down to an ember. I might still buy him for the right price, but don't overspend on him. He may not have as good of a season as he did this year.
Final Thoughts The Chicago White Sox are a good team to pick some stars from, since we're the second team of the Second City we don't have a lot of recognition and are usually an after-thought in most people's minds. I like to think we're a sleeper team, in that we have some very good players you can buy cheaply, but that may be a bit of my bias showing. Despite that, I can say I've had a heavy White Sox lineup for two seasons and I've made it to the championship both times, winning once. Just be sure to pick the stars and not fall into the traps of some of our players, and Chicago can be a good team to pick from.
