My cousin, let’s call her Sara (45), has completely cut everyone in our family off because of her poor life choices and is now blaming everyone, except for herself for her poor life choices including her parents who got divorced when she was 10 years old.

As short as I can possibly make it, she was married to a friend of mine and one day just decided in her early 30s that she just didn’t want to be married anymore and got divorced. She kept the house. This destroyed my friend but he eventually moved on and is happily married with a child. Years later she admitted that she divorced him because she was unhappy with herself and her weight. (She lost close to 100lbs a couple years after her divorce.

From the time she got divorced to present day she’s had a plethora of boyfriends and it never seems to work and after the relationship fails she always blames the guy for abusing her mentally or physically.

She was able to keep her house for years after the divorce by having roommates to help pay the mortgage. In her late 30’s she decided to quit her full time job to focus on her side business of being a Picker/Flipper. She would flaunt at family parties how well she was doing.

Around 41, she met yet another guy who lived in the next state over and was convinced this was the guy. She decided to sell her house, against everyone’s advice to move in with him. We all told her to keep the house and rent it and her dad (my uncle) even said he would be the super since he lives nearby. This was around the time of home prices skyrocketing and all she saw was dollar signs.

She sold her house and made close to $150,000. Shortly after, the relationship ended and she was homeless. Her other cousin offered to buy a nice trailer under her credit that she could live in on her property because her credit was too poor to rent a place. The deal was that Sara would make the payments on the trailer.

A couple months go by and the cousin finds out she hadn’t made a single payment on the trailer. When people start questioning Sara on where the money went, she said she bought a new car and put a lot of money into her business. It came out that she was paying for 8 different store units and she did have to put a large down payment on her car to be able to finance it to get a payment the bank was comfortable with being that she was self employed.

Remember the house we talked about earlier? When everything went through with the sale of the house, and had to claim the income from the sale of the house, the feds also wanted to know where their cut was from her picking business. Sara owes roughly $75,000 in taxes to the government.

She’s reached out to every single family member for financial assistance but doesn’t feel that she needs to “open the book” and be honest about her business and spending and what she actually owes in debts. Not that anyone actually has any money to help her.

Since no one will help her financially, she has cut everyone completely out of her life.
