Do the Gen 3 synths require their synth components to function?

I was wondering why at all that they have synth components and how they may benefit them. Do they protect the body from radiation? Do they help the body talk? Walk? I am confused about this. This is mainly because (as far as I know) without their synth components, gen 3 synths are entirely human (except for the whole birth thing).
