The near extinction of Shelter 031.
Post Body

It was a drab day in shelter 031. Christmas was over so the decorations had just come down. Our bravest dwellers were out in the wasteland, looking for supplies. The rest of us were doing our daily tasks, filling in for our many (MANY) pregnant mom's in the shelter. I guess the holiday spirit got to a lot of the couples here, not sure, I try and stay out of that drama.

As I was saying, it was a drab day, but overall a normal day. Lights were on, food was on the table, and clean-ish water to drink. I was on the treadmill working on my endurance, because I really, REALLY want to be out in the wasteland, so I am training, all day and all night to get the opportunity. So I am near the lower levels of our shelter and the lights go off. Not uncommon, but the message over the PA was. It said, "All available dwellers to primary power plant. Bring gear and weapons, we have a molerat infestation. Also, all medics, bring all available stimpaks to primary power plant, along with some Radaway. THIS IS NOT A DRILL!"

I had this feeling that I was being dragged to the primary power plant, like some external power forcing me there, it was odd, something I hadn't felt before. As I make it to the power plant, it was chaotic. The announcement I heard must have been a last-ditch effort to save the shelter. Bodies were everywhere, lying on the ground, pets were scurrying away to hide, children too! Friends, family, acquaintances lying around the power plant, with molerat bites and scratches. I am surprised I recognized some of them from the damage done. (shudders)

A few dwellers left fighting the remaining molerats, damn those things are ugly... Stimpaks are gone, Radaway is also depleted, and the few of us remaining are not only taking a beating from the molerats, but those vermin must be carrying some heavy radiation with them as well.

When it was all said and done, there were only about 6 adults left, and maybe 4 children. The outbreak must have scared many of the mother's into labor because I don't remember that many kids before. My parents are dead, my siblings are dead, my best friend's body is lying on the power plant floor.

No real leader, no power, no food, and definitely no clean water.

The survivors decided we should focus on the basic necessities and to get things back to "normal" (what is normal anymore, anyway?). It was disgusting work, trying to get the power plant back up and running while the bodies are just lying there. We were working so hard on getting the lights back on in our shelter, that we didn't even notice the collapse of many of the rooms in our shelter. It ultimately made getting power restored easier to our shelter but, we are missing the comforts we once had.

After power was restored weird things started happening. The dead started being revived. One after another after another. They were walking around like nothing happened. Radiation free and overall healthy. I try not to delve into a higher power but it can't just be from the radiation. Our Wasteland explorers had returned with their findings. After a day or two, it seemed like everyone had survived and things were slowly getting back to normal, except for the whole resurrection of everyone who was dead two days ago...

All because of a stupid molerat infestation, it almost wiped out our whole shelter... You could taste the humility in the situation. "Yea shelter 031 survived the nuclear apocalypse but was wiped off the face of the earth by a molerat infestation. Makes you chuckle a bit right...Right?!
