Is there a Canon reason why only some people get real names?

Just wondering whether it's a style choice or there's a certain class of people who get names.
I can't see any connection between Virginia, Madam Shoshanna and Plenty, Feducci and all the others with names, or anything that sets them apart from everyone else who remains nameless.
I guess the player also gets included on this list.
