From what I’ve learnt in my time researching this condition (of course I’m not a trauma expert, psychologist or in anyway a professional), is that within the DiD suffer, their consciousness is fragmented from the history of trauma. But them fragments add up to make a whole. So they can have areas of their consciousness that they only remember and recognise when in a specific consciousness state, hence the amnesia or partial amnesia. I guess it makes sense that these different personality states, can hold slightly fairly distinct differences, since the memories and life experiences differ between states. But like you say, they aren’t physically different human beings from one to the next. Just the same person that holds different memories of themselves, experiences and opinions. At least that’s how the DSM 5 lays out some of the diagnostic criteria
