ELI5: How do hydrostatic transmissions found commonly on riding mowers and small tractors work?

I know that in concept, they’re similar to a CVT in that they have infinite gear ratios between their lowest and highest ratios, but their mechanism is not an expanding/contracting pulley and belt set
