ELI5:How are herbs and their medicinal properties discovered?

I mean How did the first human discover marijuana and what it can do to you if smoked?Did he/she go through like a 1000 herbs and smoke them hoping to find something like marijuana and other herbs like Mint, Calendula, Arnica etc etc?
