ELI5: How can a house be sold for "above the asking price" as stated on so many real estate agents' advertisements?

Post Body
You know how when a house is sold, there's a sign outside that says "sold" with the name of the real estate agent? A lot of times, it says that the house was sold for "over the asking price". How does this happen? What kind of person would offer to pay more than what the owner asked for? I don't know much about buying houses.
