ELI5: Why is it that US soldiers in Vietnam and Nazi Soldiers in WW2 were treated different if they were just following orders?

While I was in class learning about the Vietnam War, I learned that during the My Lai Massacre, the US soldiers were just following orders as they were told to kill innocent Vietnamese civilians. During World War 2, the Nazi's were following orders as they were told to kill innocent Jewish civilians, yet were they were later tried. Why is it that the US soldiers and the Nazi's were treated differently, even though they both gave the same excuses when they were asked on why they carried out their actions?
