ELI5: why do family courts tend to favour the mother in a custody dispute?

assume that both parents are divorcing due to differences that have nothing to do with the kids, and neither party is trying to smear the other. neither the mother nor the father are unsound parents, and both would remain in the child's (or children's) life.
