ELI5: Why does cardio tend to lower blood sugar while weightlifting tends to increase blood sugar?

I frequently read that cardio tends to lower blood sugar whereas weight lifting tends to raise it. Would someone be able to explain this? I would think that both forms of exercise would lower blood sugar as muscles are contracting and therefore need sugar in the blood to be needed for energy.
