ELI5: Why do our bodies hold onto fat if it really doesn’t help us survive longer?

Based on what I’ve researched, there’s an optimum percentage of fat for human beings and anything too far below or above that is detrimental.

My question is specifically about fat stores. Why does our physiology allow us to hold onto so much fat if it doesn’t aid in survival? Not even overall health in day to day life, but studies have shown that fat people don’t even have an advantage of living longer without food.
