Peace,
Speaking personally — I’m a former revert that took things seriously enough to change my appearance, marital status, name, and outlook on many issues. I observed the prayers, stressed their importance to everyone I worked with, and fasted many Ramadans.
On one hand, that “devotion” made Islam harder to leave. But it’s also pushed me to find perspectives on God, morality, and “truth” outside of Muhammad’s (unbrushed) mouth and (uneducated 7th century) mind.
How “devout” were you — as a Muslim?
Is it something your parents forced?
Something you sought out, and seriously believed?
Or a mix of the two?
