I've heard a lot about the BoM musical, I have listened to a few of the tracks, and despite being horribly offensive it wasn't received by the church as super negative, just a couple GAs making jokes about how "the book was better" and missionaries passing out BoMs at play showings.
Under the Banner of Heaven is interesting because it has received incredible backlash from the church. I haven't watched it and don't really plan to, but from things I've heard a lot of exmos think it the ultimate portrayal of the dark side of the church, and the church wants to write it off as complete bullshit.
So the (maybe perspective twisted) history of a murder within ex members of the church gets more attention than the creators of South park literally saying "fuck you God" and poking fun at missionaries and showing them in garments onstage? Very weird.
