What is actually happening when a missionary calls me?

I was recently contacted by “the Missionaries,” after having reached out in the fall in an attempt to get into contact with an LDS agency. He revealed that he had no record of why I had contacted the missionaries, only a record. When I revealed how much I know about the LDS church, he became shy and embarrassed.
I know nothing about what kinds of records are kept with contacts outside of the Church. Any idea what kind of record the church has of me?
