Now that I am out, and I've heard more stories of people's experiences with disciplinary councils, I've realized that TSCC is as fallible as any of them.
The Dusty Johns episodes on Mormon Stories made this very clear to me. The differences between how different leaders treated him regarding disciplining him for his marriage was horrifying. I found his longing heartbreaking and familiar.
Maybe it's because I've heard Dusty on the radio here in eastern Idaho for years now, so I feel more connected to that story, but I found his story especially heartbreaking. He so desperately (paraphrasing his words) didn't want to be gay, but of course it isn't a choice. And then he so desperately wanted to continue to be LDS with his husband and children, and then they tried to take that away from him (I'm not sure of the results of his October disciplinary council) and dragged him along because they didn't want bad press before GenCon.
I found it all so heartbreaking.
