So, I had an event where I was very vulnerable about my story with a group of people, probably 50% of which were mormon. Afterwards, many of them came up individually to hug me and tell me something along the lines of "Jesus is always there for you and the atonement was for pain as well, you know that, right?" Or "I know your Heavenly Father loves you and that you still have a loving relationship with him." Etc etc- very genuine, in a very loving manner, and I can tell that they truly do believe that and want to connect with me/comfort me in the best way they know how.
I felt very awkward in all of those situations. It didn't feel right to mention that I don't believe in deity, and I felt belittling saying something like "though I don't necessarily believe that, I appreciate where your heart is at and where you're coming from." So I just smiled awkwardly and thanked them, then changed the subject...
I don't know. What has been successful for you in those situations?
