My parents are visiting for the weekend. My husband and I live in Florida now. My mom mentions something about the churches down here.

I selectively say, “yeah I don’t like how many cults are down here”

My mom mentions growing up with a girl who was Jehovah’s Witness and how as a young girl she told my mom that she could marry a black Jehovah’s Witness before she could marry another white man who was not Jehovah’s Witness (we are white)

“Can you believe that? She said that in the 60s!” My mom says.

I said “wow that’s pretty progressive considering the prophets spoke against interracial marriage back then”

My mom goes yeah that’s wrong

And I said, yeah the prophet was wrong huh? They said you should die if you had an interracial marriage or had interracial kids

Dead silence

I didn’t push it any further because my kids were in the car. It was great!
