As many have pointed out, the massive missionary increase seems odd. The MFMC seems to be increasing its missionary efforts significantly. But what’s the driving force behind this expansion?
One observation that can’t be ignored is that they appear to be losing members. In the face of declining membership, this surge in missionary work may be their way of compensating, an attempt to demonstrate growth and vitality.
This isn’t a new strategy in the world of organized religion. Throughout history, governments, conquerors, and institutions have expanded their power by using religious indoctrination as a tool. The Catholic Church’s role in the colonization and conversion of Native Americans and indigenous peoples in various parts of the Americas is a stark example.
The church’s quest for growth could be about maintaining control and relevance in an ever-changing world.
