Today I remembered the title JW-ism and thought about how weird of a phrase it is. "The time left is reduced." It's such a cumbersome way to say that there isn't much time left. It sounds like something Invader Zim would say if he was trying to get to a restaurant before they stopped serving breakfast. "GIR, we must hurry! The time left is REDUCED!" (GIR being Invader Zim's robot sidekick, for those unfamiliar with the classic early 2000's cartoon.)
It comes from the NWT version of 1 Corinthians 7:29. The NIV and NRSV read "the time is short" and "the appointed time has grown short", respectively. Just from comparing the NWT to them, the NWT doesn't seem too out of line in this case. Still, I think it's a curious way of putting it. I suppose it's more subtle than telling the following that the sky is falling and that the end is nigh, though that hasn't stopped them before.
If you read the context of the version, where Paul tells the Corinthians that they shouldn't marry or concern themselves with anything worldly because the end was close at hand, the takeaway is that the JWs have a nearly two thousand year old chain of Christians behind them claiming that the end was very, very, very near. Any day now. Just round the corner. The time left is reduced!
