My wife is a Christian, and since we got married I have deconverted. This has been a really tough year for us because of this division. Tonight we were having quite an open conversation about God in bed. We have had plenty of discussions before but this is the first time I've felt like my wife has really faced a hard question with honesty. This was near the end of our discussion, and I'm really pleased with how it went.
Wife - "I know that you don't see why an all-powerful god didn't leave more evidence for himself."
Me - "That's true, why do you think there's not more evidence?"
Wife - "I don't know"
Me - "If God wants everyone to know him, shouldn't he make it as easy as possible to find him, especially considering the consequences of us not getting there? Doesn't it seem cruel to you that this isn't the case?"
(Decent pause from her because she was working through it in her head)
Wife - "Maybe that's something I should investigate more and talk to people about. That's a difficult question to face and I'd like to be able to have an answer for it."
Now I'm not trying to deconvert her here. I just want her to see that there are legitimate, hard questions that Christianity struggles to provide answers for. I'm really happy to see that she is starting to take things that I say on board and face the hard questions. I made a point of thanking her for her honesty.
Just wanted to share, because I didn't have much hope a few months ago, and look where we have gotten to! Maybe this will encourage some others. It's also probably a good question to throw out to believers in your discussions, as long as your timing is good.
Peace.
