I live in Bali, and while I knew it was a place full of white spiritual new age folk before I came I didn't expect the Evangelicals 🤦♀️
So I met this woman who was into a lot of spiritual stuff, and it quickly got weird. She had all sorts of purity culturish ideas about sex, and would talk about ideas that sounded like soul ties rebranded etc. THEN she tells me she started going to church. It was different though, she insisted. They are all about just loving Jesus, and don't care what you believe, the music is cool (guitars) and worship is so intense "you can just feel the love of God." She invited me and I told her I would pass. I also challenged her a bit on what "don't care what your believe" means. Does that mean I can be gay? Unmarried and living with my partner? Do they do infant baptisms and adult ones? Etc. she said she didn't know but was certain they weren't homophobic, she wouldnt go if they were. Needless to say the friendship faded.
I went off instagram for a spell but recently redownloaded it, and at the top of my feed is a clip of her from a podcast I guess she started, interviewing a ex-lesbian who is so happy that she is living inline with how God made women now, and even married to a man. Yes in this podcast my former friend was celebrating how good God is for changing her heart.
I find it so alarming and frankly triggering that people can get so caught up in spirituality/religion and lose their values.
