COUNTIFS trouble. What would be the second part of my formula in order to add to the total count for each instance that a cell in column A is populated?

Hey everyone, I've been trying to wrap my head around this formula for way too long, I'm sure the solution is fairly simple but I can't seem to get it. I have a countifs formula to count a number of "y" (yes) in column B, fairly simple. What I'd like is a second criteria, whereby if the cell is populated in column A ("*") it adds a 1 to the count for each of those cells. What I have: =COUNTIFS(b2:b10,"y") and I've played with the rest but with no luck. The count I'm looking for in my example would be 5.
