Personally growing up in the Adventist church, I feel the doctrine can make mental illness worse. I have schizoaffective disorder depressive type. With that diagnosis comes hallucinations and delusional thoughts. Growing up learning about this almighty being that can make and do anything and everything, can make it a lot more difficult to understand and navigate the psychotic aspects. To add to this if you decide you want to exit stage left, you were thought that that’s a sin and you won’t see the pearly gates so you end up in this existence that’s continuously makes life a lot more complicated and all you’re given as a course of action is just to pray. This is just what I have felt personally throughout my mental health and the church I was raised in.
