I've seen this movie 20 times before but when I saw this scene in a theatre, I finally understood that it was supposed to signify that Shinji, Rei, and Kaworu's discussion on dreams, escapism, and breaking the cycle of running away wasn't just amongst themselves...they were talking to the audience.
