I just got stack wiped by natives

So, I’m playing as Wales, and I declared war on a native tribe to incorporate them into my growing colonial empire. Unfortunately, I forgot to raise army maintenance, so my immediate attack failed. To my surprise the natives chased me into my colony and attacked me twice again all before the end of the month, leaving me with 16 less regiments. This may be the most embarrassing thing I’ve ever done in this game.
