I've played as Spain until roughly 1556 and want to try a harder country, but when I do I always end up on the losing side of my first war. Help?

Any tips or help for moving on from the easy countries? I've tried Hungary, Austria, Minster (stupid, I know), an independent Croatia (stupider! I know!) and a few others. I'd really like to play as Austria though, any tips? Or country recommendations?
