History of the phrase “awkward silence”?
Post Body

For some reason I had always assumed describing an uncomfortable silence as “awkward” was a relatively modern construct, so I was shocked to find it in Pride and Prejudice, published in 1813:

At such a time, much might have been said, and silence was very awkward. -Chapter 43

Anyone know how far back “awkward silence” dates back? Or when it became a commonly used phrase?
