Graduation Announcements, when to send?

My girlfriend is getting her Doctorate this May and we want send graduation announcements. We can’t figure when to send them. Do we in April or after she graduates.
Note these are simple announcements for friends and distant family. We are have a graduation party for close family and friends the weekend she graduate.
