I'm currently away from my espresso machine and decided to try going to Dutch Bros instead, hoping they'd be a little better than the green mermaid's coffee. Outside, there was an ad for a Valentine's drink containing "half-roasted" white coffee espresso. I'm a huge fan of insanely light roasts, so I'm always up to try something like this. I've played around with brewing green coffee, barely roasted, etc., so this sounded like something I'd enjoy. I asked about it, and it turns out it's actually roasted at a lower temperature for a shorter period of time. So I ordered it. In my plain latte, it almost tastes like peanut butter. It's really unusual but certainly not unpleasant by any means. It's kinda like some alternate dimension of the extremely light roasted third-wave coffees.
I'm curious though....why isn't this talked about more often? I thought for sure Hoffman or Hedrick or somebody would have done a video on it by now. I know it's not like coffee as we know it, but it's a pretty tasty way to switch things up. Imagine going from drinking Pinot Noir to Sauv Blanc.
I'm also curious....where can you buy good white roast beans? I'd love to play around with some when I get back to my machine. Apparently it can be made in espresso form and pour-over with varying results? I'd love to hear some experiences/thoughts and I'm interested to see whether this is more common than I realized.
